140 years of progressive Nordic design
In 2021, we celebrate our 140th anniversary. As a pioneer of Nordic design, we embrace the essence of Nordic living: the functional and refined aesthetics and also the deep respect for the progressive ideas that shape our way of life. We believe in design that lasts from generation to generation. What started as a glass factory in 1881, now celebrates generations of essential objects that are made to enrich people’s everyday lives. During the anniversary year, we celebrate our heritage and look to the future in the changing world.
The Essence collection grows
In 2001 Alfredo Häberli, an internationally renowned Swiss-Argentinian product designer, designed Essence with the simple idea to create a series that had as few glasses as possible while still being able to serve a full range of wines. In 2021, a full twenty years since its launch, the highly acclaimed Essence collection grows with new serving items.
Nature of glass
The Iittala Glass Factory has always been a pioneer in the development of new methods for manufacturing glass, challenging established practices and creating new innovations. Iittala’s expertise and understanding of glass as a material is unique, hence why it is one of the world’s first industrial manufacturers to create tumblers solely from waste glass.
